A few weeks ago, I told you how a top global entrepreneur in AI asked me why Africa was registering so many AI app developers. He referred to a study showing there were almost as many developers on their platform as in Europe!
Then, a few days later, I was at a conference where someone independently pointed out that young African entrepreneurs were showing a remarkable interest in adopting AI for their business use, even suggesting that we could soon see an AI innovation out of Africa on the scale of M-PESA.
For those of you who don’t know, Kenya’s M-PESA launched an innovative mobile money solution that is now used by more than 2 billion people across the globe! And we are so glad this is coming out from Kenya, Africa.
Now comes this report, which says that Kenya has the highest usage adoption of ChatGPT, the leading GenAI platform in the world!

After we announced recently that Kenya was one of five countries where we will build Africa’s first AI supercomputer, it was a decision based on market research and tech possibilities.
And I can tell you that within weeks of that announcement, we had already been inundated with requests for even more capacity than we had originally planned for the country, forcing us to review our plans.
As Kenya does not have natural resources like oil and gold to anchor its economy, it has long sought to develop a technology-based ecosystem, advancing ahead with the Western countries.
And it has succeeded. I think some of you here on the platform are amongst the tech-savvy entrepreneurs and innovators who have been busy growing Kenya’s tech sector for almost two decades now, across different niche bases and governments!
Other African countries should really “fast follow” the Kenyan example, as indeed others have begun to do. There are so many good things we can learn from each other across the African continent!
