Glucose plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy and active body. It helps in the regulation of blood sugar levels. By this, glucose provides the body with the required energy to function.
Thus, from the food you eat to your inner mechanics, contributes to how your body produces and uses glucose daily.
So what is glucose? It is the simplest of carbohydrates which makes it a monosaccharide. Meaning that it has one sugar. Put differently:
Glucose is a simple sugar that is a component of many carbohydrates and is an important source of energy in living organisms. It is a type of sugar you get from the food you eat.
How does the body produce glucose?
The body derives glucose from foods that contain carbohydrates and sugars that we eat. For example, rice, honey, pasta, potatoes, white bread, fruits, etc.
Acid elements in the stomach break down the food we eat and convert the sugars and starches from the food into glucose also known as blood sugar.
Your intestines then absorb the glucose and send it to your bloodstream. Then insulin begins to pump in order to transfer glucose to your cells. This allows your body to instantaneously use the glucose for energy or store it for later use.
For most cells in the body to function, glucose is highly required. The brain is the organ that demands glucose the most in the body.
This is because the brain contains so many neurons that consume glucose on a constant basis – because these neurons are constantly engaged by performing jobs like thinking, learning, and remembering.
Consequently, when the brain does not have the right glucose proportion, the neurons won’t be able to function optimally. This is the reason why when you don’t eat for a long while or skip meals intermittently, you might struggle with remembering things, concentrating, and being easily irritable.
When your brain is short of glucose for long, it could lead to dementia or cognitive difficulties. Which is a serious condition.
Also, like other parts of the body, the liver is always in need of glucose. The same way red blood cells require glucose to produce energy. A balanced diet is key to maintaining blood sugar levels in a body that can produce insulin.
In as much as your body needs glucose through food intake primarily, nonetheless, consuming meals that are high in sugar or processed carbohydrates could result in certain complications like dehydration, fatigue, and headache.
On the other hand, denying your body sugars and carbohydrates could lead to mood swings or inability to focus. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, you need to understand the foods your body requires to produce the right level of glucose.
Certain foods with high fat or sugar content are hard to resist because your body releases dopamine when you eat them. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the human brain – which makes you feel good.
It can also transmit signals in the brain between the nerve cells or neurons. When your glucose level is optimal, it is seldom noticed. But when they fall short, the unhealthy effect would be felt in the body system.

There’re a variety of reasons that blood sugar levels can shoot up. For example, a heavy meal, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, and other illnesses. A glucose level is said to be too low when it is under 70 mg/dL. This condition is also known as“ hypoglycemia”. Hypoglycemia could occur when people with diabetes skip their medication.
One way that diabetes occurs is when the pancreas doesn’t secrete insulin in the way it should.
In conclusion, healthy glucose levels help to keep the body working at its best. It is, therefore, important that you eat a healthy balanced diet. Engaging in exercise regularly and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle is essential too. For someone living with diabetes, a course of treatment would help.
Every cell of the human body requires energy to perform the metabolic functions that sustain life.
